Make sure you get a valid qualification! PDF Print E-mail
Something that was brought to our attention last year was the number of Fly by night institutions that exist and how people invest tons of money in them and walk away with a qualification that is not even worth the value of the paper it is printed on.

So here is the low down:
The Government established in 1998 The South African Council of Higher Education (CHE) which has a sub Committee called the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC). Between these two bodies they hold the responsibility of accreditation and quality of education in South Africa.

So whether the institution is a full time or distance learning establishment there are a number of protocols that needs to be followed.

1.The institution needs to be registered with the Department of Education (DoE)

2.Every qualification needs to be registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF)

3.The institution needs to be accredited by the CHE.

4.For a higher education (HE) institution to qualify as a HE provider it needs to have qualifications at the NQF level 5 and above.

Sounds hectic, yeah we know!! Just make sure you not getting ripped off, education is a huge investment and making an informed decision early on is important!!

What is a qualification?
A qualification is the formal recognition and certification awarded by an accredited institution. The volume of learning required for a qualification can be specified in terms of the total minimum number of credits required for a specific qualification. Credits are calculated according to the number of notional study hours required for achieving the learning outcomes specified for the qualification. One credit is equal to ten notional study hours in this calculation.

What is a degree?
A degree is a qualification that an individual earns on completion of a number of courses that are offered within a university/technikon/institution. Most degrees are spaced over three years, these are known as undergraduate degrees. However some degrees are setout over a four year period in which the individual will qualify with an incorporated honours degree. This is often the case with LLB, Engineering and B.Bus.Sci degrees. On completion of a degree an individual would have qualified with a minimum of two majors. A major is a third year course which an individual will specialize in, i.e. Applied Mathematics, Management etc.
