Q: Do you need to apply with your grade 11 report when going to varsity? A: Normally you do not have to apply for varsity with your grade 11 results. However, it is advisable to apply using your grade 11 marks to make sure that you have a spot in the course for the year after you leave school. When you apply using your grade 11 marks you are provisionally accepted. This means that you have a spot in the course as long as you pass matric with the necessary entrance requirements. No matter what your marks are in grade 11, your final matric results are what matter most.

Q: I am in grade 11 and I would like to study medicine and specialise in psychiatry. I take Maths, and Biology; my only concern is that I take maths on standard grade. Can I get into medicine with standard grade maths? A: You may still apply to study medicine at a University if you are on Standard Grade maths. At the University of Cape Town, for example, you need at least 40% on Higher Grade for both maths and physical science. For Standard Grade you need at least 50% for both these subjects. You will also need a matric exemption. For more information visit: http://www.uct.ac.za

Q: Next year I’m interested in doing "Multimedia technology' I just want to know what is it all about. A: Multimedia Technology is indeed a very fascinating area of expertise. There is an array of different lines of work within this profession. If you were to study for a Bachelor of Science degree in Multimedia Technology and Design you could study anything from movie animation and multimedia production to web design. You could also study special effects and 3-D modeling. A very informative website regarding Multimedia Technology is that of the University of Kent. Although an overseas institution you can gain important information about future careers from this website.

Q: I have three choices, to do: B.Sc (physics), chemical engineering or civil engineering, which one should I choose considering that I'm in South Africa? A: All three options that you are interested in are fairly common degrees. With the Soccer World Cup in 2010 there will be an increase in developments and infrastructure; many of these developments have already started. This means that there will be opportunities for people involved in the construction of buildings, bridges and roads.
